Our founder, Noah, discovered firsthand the healing properties of probiotics during his late twenties (check his story out in his own words here). But, it wasn't just any probiotics. It was a very special blend of advanced probiotic species that he used to create homemade yogurt that not only healed himself, but also his friends and family.
Our Super-Live Probiotic Yogurt is still made using Noah's medicinal yogurt recipe! To learn more about the specific strains we use, and reported health benefits check out our blog post here.
So, what are probiotics exactly?
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, probiotics are "live microorganisms that are intended to have health benefits when consumed or applied to the body."
Live microorganisms refer to the strain or strains of beneficial bacteria that must be alive when consumed. At The Coconut Cult we small batch ferment 25 billion highly active probiotics into every serving, giving our customers an insanely potent probiotic coconut yogurt.
And, why are they so important to our health?
Our bodies are essentially hosts for a multitude of bacteria, aka the microbiome. More and more research is coming out on how the microbiome is intricately connected to health and disease. According to the National Institutes of Health, specific strains of probiotics seems to have specific benefits. In our probiotic coconut yogurt we use 16 potent probiotic strains: L. Lactis, S. Thermophilus, L. Salivarius, L. Acidophilus, L. Helveticus, L. Plantarum, L. Gasseri, L. Brevis, L. Casei, L. Fermentum, L. Reuteri, L. Phamnosus, B. Long, B. Infantis, B. Breve, and B. Bifidum.
According to Harvard Medical School, "...a growing body of scientific evidence suggests that you can treat and even prevent some illnesses with foods and supplements containing certain kinds of live bacteria. Northern Europeans consume a lot of these beneficial microorganisms, called probiotics (from pro and biota, meaning "for life"), because of their tradition of eating foods fermented with bacteria, such as yogurt."
What's the best way to consume probiotics?
Certainly there is a plethora of probiotic supplements out there, and we always recommend that people do their own research to discover which strains may be best for any specific ailments they are hoping to target. With all that said, we believe the probiotics found in small batch fermented foods, like our Coconut Cult Yogurt, is unlike anything else. Plus it just tastes amazing. Most of our cult members, enjoy a big spoonful of our yogurt after dinner for a healthy whole food treat in lieu of any probiotic supplements.
As our founder, Noah, discovered for himself: "Once you take your health back into your own hands, you never look back."
