A Spoonful of Clarity 🥄 Let's Talk Yogurt Reactions

Hey cult members,

Brittany here, 👋 Noah’s wife!  I’ve been seeing some feedback on social media that I want to address.

Before I do, I’ll give you a brief summary on my scope of practice and credentials so that you can trust that I’m not just talking gibberish.  Back in 2018, I graduated from The Institute of Integrative Nutrition as a certified health coach, I took multiple courses on gut health to further my education, as well as studied Herbalism with Herbal Academy.  I’m also a yoga teacher, but that’s a story for another time.  Prior to getting into the wellness space, I taught 2nd & 3rd grade, all subjects, for 5+ years.  To say that teaching people is my passion would be an understatement.  Teaching about gut health is specifically one of my greatest passions!

Now onto the feedback and concerns that we’ve been seeing roll in. There have been very few, but I think it’s important to educate our community so that you can help us educate others in the future.

“Your yogurt caused bloating and gas”, “your yogurt gave me an allergic reaction”, “your yogurt caused severe nausea”, “your yogurt made me run to the bathroom”. Sound familiar?  When I first started consuming probiotic rich foods, I had similar reactions.

Here are two of the main reasons:

1.) Your gut is adjusting to new bacteria — when you first start consuming new strains of good bacteria, your microbiome needs time to adjust to these new living microorganisms.  This adjustment can cause a reaction, especially if you have a sensitive gut, or possibly an abundance of bad bacteria.  Introducing the good bacteria in our yogurt will crowd out the bad bacteria over time.  There is quite literally a competition going on in your gut to see which bacteria will survive.  Slow and steady. Try not to overdo it and reduce your serving size until you no longer have a reaction.

2.) Histamine intolerance — some probiotics or fermented foods can produce histamine. If you have an intolerance to histamine heavy foods such as cheese, shellfish, peanuts, beer etc., our yogurt may cause an allergic reaction. This is pretty uncommon with our yogurt, but it has happened.  Look into an antihistamine (I like Seeking Health) and take prior to consumption of histamine heavy foods, or you can experiment with different strains to see which strain is affecting you.  This also goes without saying, but if you are allergic to coconuts, our yogurt should be avoided.

I hope this was helpful.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our customer support team if you have any other questions, concerns or feedback.  We love hearing from you!
